"So Bored"

Sporadic Rant:
A brief one-day interlude from When Girls Go Wild. That'll wrap up tomorrow in a double-length feature comic. Today's comic is brought to you by the oh-so-artistically-talented Alison K. She happened to be working in the lab when I did my week's worth of cartooning, so I prodded her into making her own contribution. She was pretty adamant about wanting to do the entire thing, though, so here is her mighty creation. I guess she was striving for realism, too, with the addition of my little ankle brace. I'll probably take Sunday off, or feature a guest strip I did for Avalon if it's posted that day.

I'm fairly depressed right now because I just finished watching Grave of the Fireflies again. Boy, it put me in a deep melancholy immediately. It's the most bittersweet piece of film I think I've ever seen. I don't know why it's considered a children's movie (albeit award-winning), when it's so so much more than that. I didn't think I was going to cry this time around; but sure enough, my eyes started welling up ten minutes in. It's such a sad poignant piece of storytelling that hits home, especially after watching fun, well-done, but ultimately pointless movies such as Gladiator and Mission: Impossible 2. If only more movies dealt with topics such as incredibly humanized sibling relationships and the loss of innocence during wartime ... well, then we'd all be a lot more depressed after going to the movies. Don't consider Grave of the Fireflies to be your typical anime, or even your typical animated film. It is one of the most touching movies you will ever see in your life. Period. I don't know a single person who's seen it and hasn't come away deeply moved. The New York Times describes it as "elegiac and riveting." I strongly urge you all to rush out and rent/buy this movie, especially if it's the widescreen DVD version. Watch it with a loved one. I'm a romantic at heart, and there are fewer and fewer things to treasure in an increasingly superficial and cynical world. Grave of the Fireflies is one of them. Blah, enough with the schmaltzy garbage; I think I ranted it out of my system.
